What to eat for breakfast is a constant question I ask myself.
I love oatmeal, especially whole oat oatmeal in the winter. Sometimes I mix it up with some maple syrup, cinnamon and ginger or a little peanut butter and jelly or just a nice heaping spoonful of thick orange marmalade. Oatmeal is warming, highly customizable and, as my grandmother would say, “sticks to your ribs.”
But in the summer, I’m often at a loss for what to eat for breakfast. On a lazy Sunday, breakfast at The Florida Avenue Grill on Florida and 13th St is greasy, soul-food sublimity: eggs, bacon, scrapple(!), stewed apples, corn muffins, pork chops, red eye gravy and more served on faded pink plastic plates and all the coffee you can drink in faded plastic mugs.
What I end up eating everyday is usually a salad of shredded cabbage, cucumbers, raw onion, tomatoes and tofu sometimes drizzled with homemade Russian dressing or sesame-soy dressing (recipes below). Today’s salad was also garnished with a just-picked Sweet Gypsy pepper from the backyard.
Russian Dressing:
- 3 parts mayonnaise to 1 part ketchup
- a lil’ pickle juice/lemon juice/vinegar
- optional:a pinch of cayenne pepper for spice
Tahini Soy Dressing:
- 1/3 cup soy sauce (or tamari, if you prefer)
- 1/3 cup tahini
- juice of one lemon
- optional: thin with a bit of water, sesame oil, or rice vinegar
