The Golden Mean

Just like humans, plants seem to have a sacred geometry of their own as well. There’s certainly a bit of the Golden Mean in that lovely little cucumber tendril above, don’t you think?

These tendrils are remarkable – they are purely designed to help the cucumber grow up and over vertical surfaces. They’re not sticky at all but incredibly strong and covered at their base in tiny fine hairs. Some gardeners advocate pinching them off to focus the plant’s energy on fruit-producing but I leave them on.

Did you notice the tiny insect, exactly color coordinated, perched delicately on the tendril? I certainly didn’t – I didn’t notice him until I saw the pictures on the computer.

This year, I’m also trying cowhorn peppers. Unlike the jalapeños and the bell peppers, the cowhorns are already fruiting (see below).

I see a lot of hot sauce in our future.
